Build a Wind Turbine: Is This Right For You?
November 12th, 2011 Filed Under General
It only makes sense that more and more people would be interested in the option to build a wind turbine for their own homes. Energy costs have increased exponentially recently, and many say they will continue to rise as the years progress. Wind energy is a free, green energy source, and many people today want to know more about this energy source to see if it is right for their homes and for their needs.
When you consider the option to build a wind turbine, you will first want to consider just how windy it actually is around your place of residence. Consider if the wind is naturally blocked by nearby buildings or trees, or if the windy typically blows freely on most days. Then consider the space you have available to erect such a structure. There are smaller versions available than the large commercial models you likely have seen, but some space will still be required. On top of this, you will want to consider your home energy consumption to see just what percentage of your consumption will be covered by your efforts to build this project. In many cases, a turbine will cover most or all of a home’s needs.
Many people who make the effort to build a wind turbine will also add other green energy projects to their home generation system. While the wind does indeed blow most days, there are times when the air is still, and you will still need energy on these days. So often times people will add a solar panel or two as a secondary DIY project to generate a secondary source of energy. These are free, green energy projects that most people who are handy with tools can easily do over the course of a weekend or two, and they can provide you with many years free of utility costs in the future!
