Saving Money and Energy Now
October 28th, 2008 Filed Under General
Aside from politics, the two hottest topics these days are the economy and the environment. Usually you do not think of these as going hand in hand, but with a little thought you can see how they can be very closely related.
As we go more high tech we tend to use more energy, at the same time we distance ourselves and become more insulated from the environment. The more energy we use, the more polluted our environment becomes, the more green house gases we create, the more we contribute to global warming, and thus the more money we spend on both energy and trying to clean up the environmental mess.
Now, more than ever, it is necessary to find ways to save energy and to save money. You can start to see how they are related. The more energy you save, the more money you save and the better it is for the environment.
Here are a few tips to help you save both Money and Energy:
1) Unplug All Devices That Use Phantom Power.
Phantom power is the small amount of electricity that is used by all those devices when they are not in use.
a) For example, any remote controlled device such as a TV or Stereo continues to use electricity even when off. That is how it is able to detect the remote telling it to turn on, and that is how it is able to turn on almost instantly.
b) All devices that have chargers use phantom power. Some examples are cell phone chargers, bluetooth headset charger, iPod or MP3 charger etc.
2) Unplug Your Computer Equipment At Night.
Do not leave your computer turned on at night. Letting it go into standby mode is good, but turning it off is even better. Similarly, your printer can go into standby mode when not in use for an extended period of time, but it will always draw some electricity. If you know you will not be using your computer for an extended period of time unplug your printer. A good method is to unplug the printer any time you power down your computer. There are special power strips available that can do this for you automatically.
3) Use Florescent, CFL or LED Lights.
Using florescent, compact florescent lights (CFLs) or LED lights instead of incandescent bulbs whenever possible will save as much as 60% or more electricity and money and will last much longer. And remember to turn off the lights when leaving the room for more than a few minutes to save even more.
4) Install Skylights Or Light Tubes Where Possible.
Natural lighting is even better than any artificial light source and doesn’t use any electricity at all.
